The C8 Corvette Background

The 8th generation Chevy C8 Corvette is the first mid-engine Corvette sports car since the 1950s. But, that’s not where the innovations end. According to Car and Driver, the 2020-2026 Chevrolet features several unique designs:

• No option for manual transmission

  • The last time this occurred was back in 1953 when Corvette only offered an automatic option. The C8 Corvette has an automatic eight-speed dual-clutch, which removes the mechanical connection and increases structural strength.

• Doesn’t have leaf springs

  • The C2 and C3 used transverse leaf springs and the C4 through C7 Corvette models used composite transverse leaf springs.

• All four corners are supported on coil springs between control arms

• The entire structure is aluminum

  • While other generations used aluminum structures, the C8 Corvette eliminated rails in favor of an advanced backbone structure.

After riding the high of the C8 Corvette Stingray’s release, in mid-July, Chevy announced that the remaining 2020-2026 C8 Corvette orders would not have a high wing spoiler option. Why? Well, the third party supplier that had been manufacturing the popular Chevrolet accessory was financially impacted by COVID and fell severely behind in production. Corvette bloggers across the world were shocked!

What’s worse is that the orders that had already been placed but not yet fulfilled had the rear spoiler completely deleted from the order! But, there’s a silver lining in the works for Chevrolet Corvette enthusiasts. 

In an effort to fill the market’s void, RPI Designs, a leading supplier in Corvette performance and aftermarket parts, quickly stepped in to replicate, produce and sell both painted and carbon fiber C8 Corvette high wing spoilers.
